  • “As a tap dancer who does not live in a major city, it is not always possible to practice dancing with a live band. Not only did we get that opportunity to enjoy dancing with a jazz band, we were able to pick all their brains to understand the music and their perspectives of playing with a tap dancer.”

  • “Adam was very knowledgeable and interesting. It was fun to be with other tap dancers in an open, relaxed forum.”

  • “The class was very informative and helpful! We worked on rhythm training not only by practicing our tapping, but by discussing it as well. Taking this class has been a huge help!”

  • “Bridging the Gap was a great reminder of how the relationship between music and dance should be. It opened my mind to new ideas and perspectives, and has definitely changed the way I approach creating teaching choreography.”

  • “As tap dancers we need to prioritize our music theory and musicality just as much as our tap technique. It was wonderful to be able to attend this workshop and make connections with people who are interested in this as well. Adam did a wonderful job of sharing his knowledge while allowing for discussion to improve understanding.”

  • "The workshop with Relative Rhythms, produced by Emily and Adam, was incredible. Adam's knowledge of music theory, jazz, jam session etiquette and how-to's, and how these can be more approachable for tap dancers was top notch! All of the tap dancers' questions were welcomed. Adam answered them well, sometimes directly and easily, and sometimes with open conversation and lots of room to explore the jam experience. The room was a comfortable and safe place to ask all of those questions that make us say "I should probably know this, but....", without judgement. I would highly recommend a workshop with Adam and Emily, and hope to work with them both more in the future."

  • Adam’s instruction on jazz form, music theory, and jazz jams was so valuable. These topics should be required learning for tap dancers! The introduction to jazz form really made things click for me and made improvising with a band feel so much less intimidating. I feel more confident knowing when to take a solo and for how long and how to keep track of where we are in the song without relying solely on counting. And now that I’ve learned some jazz standards and common forms, it’s much easier to learn new tunes and be able to recognize and play them with musicians.

  • The workshop also gave me a new perspective on choreographing to jazz music and keeping the form. As a director of a tap company, I’m excited to have a new approach to choreography that will enable us to more easily perform with live musicians. I highly recommend Adam’s classes! The workshop was a welcoming space to ask questions and get hands-on experience for tap dancers to collaborate with musicians - and as musicians.
